Next, find the halfway point between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock mark on your watch face. Imagine a line running right through that point. Boom! In the Northern Hemisphere, that line points approximately south. North, naturally, is directly behind you (180 degrees opposite).
Important consideration: This method is most accurate around noon. Earlier or later in the day, the angle will be less precise. Time of year also matters. The farther you are from the equator, the less accurate this method becomes, especially during summer when the sun is higher in the sky. For maximum accuracy, adjust for Daylight Saving Time (if applicable) – subtract one hour from the actual time before using this method.
Alternatively, if you’ve got the patience of a seasoned hiker, you can simply observe the sun’s movement over time. Mark its position now, then again after an hour or so. The sun always rises in the east and sets in the west (roughly, of course, depending on location and season). This method is less precise for finding exact directions, but it’s invaluable for maintaining a general heading and preventing you from walking in circles – a common trap for the unwary!
