Don’t let the water run while brushing your teeth. Wet your brush, turn off the tap, brush, and turn on briefly to rinse. Simple, yet powerful – a lesson taught in schools globally.
Similarly, while shaving, fill the sink basin with a little water for rinsing your razor instead of letting the tap run continuously. It’s a small change saving surprisingly large volumes over time.
Install low-flow aerators on kitchen and bathroom faucets. They reduce water flow while maintaining pressure, a common feature seen in efficiency-focused designs everywhere from bustling cities to remote guesthouses.
Wash dishes by filling the sink or a basin with water, rather than letting the tap run for rinsing. If you have two sinks, use one for washing and one for rinsing – mimicking professional kitchens’ efficiency.
Use your dishwasher only when it’s full. Modern dishwashers are often more water-efficient than washing by hand, especially if you pre-rinse under running water – skip the rinse cycle if possible.
Thaw frozen food in the refrigerator overnight or in the microwave, not under running hot water. This saves both water and energy, a practical tip for any kitchen.
Keep a container by the sink to collect water used for rinsing fruits or vegetables. Use this water to nourish your houseplants or garden – greywater reuse on a small scale.
Set up rain barrels to collect water from your downspouts. This free water is perfect for watering plants, saving treated drinking water. A practice embraced for centuries in various climates and now seeing a resurgence.
Water lawns and gardens in the early morning or late evening. This minimizes evaporation, ensuring the water reaches the roots where it’s needed most – watering midday is often largely wasted.
Use mulch around plants and garden beds. It helps the soil retain moisture, reduces evaporation, and suppresses weeds, meaning less frequent watering is needed. It’s nature’s own water-saving blanket.
Consider landscaping with native, drought-tolerant plants. They require significantly less water once established, reflecting smart design seen in arid regions adapted to local conditions.
Use a broom to sweep driveways, patios, and sidewalks instead of using a hose. Hosing down uses a surprising amount of water unnecessarily; physical cleaning is more water-wise.
Regularly check your irrigation system or sprinklers for leaks, broken heads, or misdirected spray hitting pavement instead of plants. Ensure your water is going where it’s intended.
Wash only full loads of laundry. If you must wash a small load, use the lowest water level setting available on your machine. Many newer machines automatically adjust, but older ones require manual selection.
While waiting for hot water to reach your tap, collect the initially cold water in a bucket. Use this water for cleaning, watering plants, or other purposes instead of letting it go down the drain. It’s a simple capture-and-reuse strategy.
How do you limit water activity?
For us out on the trail, it’s all about keeping food from going bad. See, tiny microbes need ‘available’ water to grow and spoil your rations. Every bug has a lower limit on how much of that available water it needs before it just can’t thrive anymore.
So, to limit that water activity and make food last without refrigeration, you either take water away or add things that tie it up. Drying food, like making jerky or dried fruit, removes most of the water directly. Or, you add solutes like lots of salt (hello, jerky!) or sugar (think dried fruit or trail mix with sugary bits) or even high concentrations of glycerin or certain alcohols, which bind up the water making it unavailable for the microbes. This makes your food naturally self-preserving, critical for a lightweight pack and avoiding stomach issues miles from anywhere.
How do you reduce excess water?
Feeling a bit swollen or heavy from travel? Excess water weight is common when you’re on the go due to changes in diet, activity, and even air pressure. Here are my tried-and-true ways to manage it while exploring:
- Stay Active: Exercise is crucial. Whether it’s hiking a new trail, getting lost (on purpose!) in a city, or just a quick hotel workout, movement helps your body sweat and improves circulation to flush out fluids.
- Watch Your Sodium: Street food and restaurant meals are often high in salt, which makes you retain water. Be mindful and try to balance with fresher, lower-sodium options when possible. Sodium is a major culprit for water retention, especially with inconsistent eating patterns.
- Boost Potassium Intake: Potassium counteracts sodium. Pack potassium-rich snacks like bananas or dried apricots for easy access, or find foods like sweet potatoes, spinach, and beans locally. It helps maintain fluid balance.
- Consider Magnesium: This mineral aids in balancing electrolytes and fluids. Travel stress and irregular schedules can affect your body’s balance, so a magnesium supplement can be a helpful small item to pack.
- Leverage Natural Diuretics: Certain foods, herbs, and drinks naturally encourage urination, helping you shed excess water. Think hydrating foods like cucumber, watermelon, and celery; herbs like parsley or dandelion (sometimes found in teas); and even moderate caffeine consumption (coffee/tea). These can be easy to incorporate from local markets or cafes.
- Be Mindful of Carbs: Carbohydrates hold onto water in your body. While you need energy for adventures, reducing excessive consumption of overly starchy or processed foods can help shed that extra water weight. Focus on complex carbs and balance your meals.
