My Tunisian adventure commenced in Tunis, a city that seamlessly blends the old with the new. The labyrinthine medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, captivated me with its narrow, winding alleyways, bustling souks (markets) overflowing with spices, textiles, and handcrafted goods, and the majestic Zitouna Mosque, a testament to Tunisia’s rich Islamic heritage. In stark contrast, the modern city offers a glimpse into Tunisia’s contemporary dynamism, with its wide boulevards, elegant cafes, and vibrant nightlife. I spent several days exploring both facets of the city, experiencing the sensory overload of the medina and the sophisticated ambiance of the modern districts.
Coastal Charms and Inland Adventures
From Tunis, I travelled north to Bizerte, a coastal city with a fascinating history and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. Its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful beaches provided a welcome respite after the bustling energy of Tunis. Further inland, El Kef offered a fascinating glimpse into Tunisia’s mountainous interior, a region known for its stunning natural beauty and Berber heritage. The ancient Roman ruins scattered throughout the area hinted at the region’s rich past. The journey through these varied landscapes showcased the geographical diversity of Tunisia.
The Sahara Beckons: Tozeur and Tataouine
My trip then took a dramatic turn southward, towards the heart of the Sahara desert. Tozeur, an oasis town with palm-lined streets and traditional architecture, provided a captivating entry into the desert landscape. The stark beauty of the Sahara was fully revealed in Tataouine, a town renowned for its distinctive architecture and its role as a filming location for several Star Wars movies. The vast, undulating dunes and the unique ksar (fortified granaries) presented a truly unforgettable spectacle, showcasing the dramatic contrast between the north and south of the country.
Historical Echoes: El Jem, Sfax, Sousse, Monastir, and Kairouan
The southern journey culminated in a return to the coast and the exploration of Tunisia’s significant historical sites. El Jem houses one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in North Africa, a staggering testament to the Roman Empire’s influence. The coastal cities of Sfax, Sousse, and Monastir each offered their own distinct flavors; Sfax with its vibrant port, Sousse with its stunning medina and Ribat (fortified monastery), and Monastir with its serene beaches and the mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the country’s first president. Finally, Kairouan, one of Islam’s oldest holy cities, offered a profound spiritual experience, with its magnificent mosques and intricate medina.
